Lunar New Year Celebration

Saturday January 28, 2023 10am-1pm
At Mission Garden - in the Chinese Garden
Suggested donation at the garden gate

Lunar New Year is the beginning of an annual calendar year whose months are moon cycles. The event as a celebration is observed by numerous Asian, South Asian, and Middle Eastern cultures. The Lunar New Year starts with a new moon that falls between late January and mid February.

Mission Garden partners with the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center (TCCC) in the design and management of its Chinese Garden plot. The Garden celebrates a variety of festivals throughout the year, some based on harvest times and some on the customs of the cultures represented in garden plots.

The TCCC is having events at their location on January 14 and 21, so we teamed with them to hold a Lunar New Year celebration at Mission Garden on January 28. It will be held in the area around Mission Garden’s Chinese Garden plot.

Mission Garden board member Fe Tom will talk about the tradition of Lunar New Year. The TCCC will have a table with unique items for sale. There will be a Chinese calligraphy demonstration table. Also featured will be a yo-yo demonstration and a Lion Dance! There will be an information table about the Chinese vegetables grown in the Chinese Garden at Mission Garden.

At noon there will be Chinese Veggie Cooking Class (see separate calendar listing to sign up).
