Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These students take great pride in their education and want to see the world outside of Tucson, Arizona. These 8th graders come from diverse backgrounds and wish to explore ocean life by attending this trip.
In our society, it is increasingly important to become global citizens and to learn about the world around us. These students will be able to discover a world they have never seen before and interact with marine life. No classroom experience will ever compare to this trip!
We will take a charter bus from Tucson, Arizona and travel to Long Beach, California. While on the island the students stay in bare cabins with bunk beds. They are responsible for making their beds, setting the table, and cleaning up after each meal. During their stay on the island, they attend labs to learn about ocean life. Since the island is currently experiencing drought, they learn about water conservation. The students are also involved in many team building activities, such as, rock climbing, snorkeling, nature hikes, and stargazing. In order to get the full experience of the beauty of nature, the students cell phones are held in a safe while on the island.
This trip is an amazing experience for these excellent students. Our school is 94% free and reduced lunch, which means that most families struggle financially and may not be able to afford to send their child on this trip. Learning about marine biology in a hands-on way will excite them to further their education and possibly push for a career in this field. These students will get to experience things we have learned in class, for example, environmental factors, symbiotic interactions, organism interactions, and microbiology. The students also build relationships with each other and their teachers and Vice Principal while exploring the world without their cell phone in their hand.
In Their Own Words
We will be developing leadership skills through this field trip because we will have to learn how to work together through team building activities. Some of the activities that we will be participating in are: snorkeling, rock climbing, labs, hiking, setting the table, cleaning up after meals, and keeping our room clean.
We will make our school proud by being respectful and responsible citizens to others and to the environment. We are excited to experience being on a boat, being in the ocean, and seeing marine life up close and personal. We are expected to be independent on this trip and clean up after ourselves, set the table, make the bed, and be on time for activities.
If this project is funded, we will be able to experience activities that we have not had a chance to experience. We will also be able to explore the area of marine biology in a fun and exciting way! This field trip will help us to be more independent and help to create lasting friendships.
